One thing everyone has been asking me is why do i shoot with the sony a7sii for photography and not the a7ii and a7rii? Looking through reviews i have never seen the a7sii reviewed with stills like it is with videos. So i decided to this blog explaining why i choose the a7sii as my main camera, there are so many reasons as to why i choose to shoot with it.

With the a7sii MP doesn’t worry me, I never found the need to want a 42mp camera. I have found the 12mp sony a7sii achieve great detail in it’s images. I have printed large prints with it and never had any issues. I use the a7sii for many things such as portraits, macro’s, landscapes, weddings etc.

Low Light

The a7sii is truly the king of low light. There has been so many situations where it literally saved me in terrible light environments. With this camera i have shot at 12800 ISO at weddings without flash and barley any noise in the image, whereas my a7ii wouldn’t be able to achieve that without a lot of noise. With the image below i did not use any noise reduction just standard edit in lightroom

Sony a7sii + Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ISO 12800 (no flash)
“The a7sii performs really well in great light situations for portraits and landscapes not just in low light conditions producing great details on the images.”

AutoFocus

One thing i love about the a7sii is the AF as it is fast and accurate. I have never had any delays or issues with the AF. Just to prove how well the a7sii AF is i decided to use this camera at a race track for cars drifting on wet road and i must say the a7sii kept up with the cars really well.

Here is another image captured in the aquarium of some jelly fish. In this section of the aquarium it was dark and no flash was allowed. The only light that was present in the tank was the glow of the jelly fish. I was among a few other people who were using different brand cameras and they had difficulty with focusing. When i went up to take the shot as i suspected the AF was fast and accurate without any delay or struggle. Here is the image captured.

Dynamic Range

Maybe it is just me but i love the dynamic range of the a7sii. I personally find the dynamic range to be better than the a7ii. I don’t own the a7rii so i can’t say or compare the a7sii to the a7rii. With the a7sii you can recover a lot of detail in the shadows and highlights especially shooting in uncompressed raw. Some people say there isn’t any difference between uncompressed and compressed raw, well to me there is a difference and you will notice it when recovering detail. Below is an image before and after shot in uncompressed raw showing you the detail that has been recovered.

Sony a7sii + Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ISO 100, f16, shutter 1s (uncompressed raw file, unedited)
Sony a7sii + Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ISO 100, f16, shutter 1s (uncompressed raw file, edited)
People often ask me if you can get the eyes to be nice and sharp like the a7rii does. The answer is yes. Below is an image i captured with the a7sii + Zeiss 35mm f1.4, as you can see the details in the girl’s eyes showing the dancers on the dance floor. This image was edited in light room no enhancement with the eyes.
Sony a7sii + Zeiss 35m f1.4. ISO 3200 f1.4
The a7sii performs really well in great light situations for portraits and landscapes not just in low light conditions producing great details on the images. Below are a couple of images with good light conditions.
sony a7sii + zeiss 35mm f1.4 ISO 100, f3.2, shutter 1/8000
Sony a7sii + zeiss 35mm f1.4 ISO 100, f1.4, shutter 1/2500
Sony a7sii + Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ISO 100 f1.4, shutter 1/320

As you can see with the images above it is proof that the a7sii is great for photography not just for videos.
